Whether its to win a major championship tournament, become a scratch golfer or anything else you truly desire, it’s important that your subconscious mind is on board with your goals!
Say you have an 8 handicap and your goal is to become a 4 this year. The most minute of subconscious patterns could prevent you from getting there.
For example, simply looking at the ball can unconsciously provoke aggravation, aggression, disgust, fear or any number of things which would automatically (reflexively) set off a physical stress response.
The term “stress” is short for distress, a word evolved from Latin that means “to draw or pull apart.” The Romans even used the term districtia to describe “a being torn asunder.” If you’ve been playing golf for any amount of time, you know exactly what this feels like.
Biologically speaking, stress hormones cause the blood flow to move from the prefrontal cortex, responsible for strategic thinking, to the hindbrain which is wired for fight or flight. The problem with stress in this case is that you’re ready to run from danger… not remain focused on your game.
You can now understand some of what contributes to first tee jitters. The chemistry in your body is telling you to run while you’re doing you best to stay calm and focused.
If you think simply knowing about a problem like ball-stress will change it, you’re in for a struggle. It just doesn’t work.
The truth is that informing your conscious intellect does little or nothing to change the problem at reflexive or emotional level. Being aware of the solution, but not knowing how to implement it consistently, can even worsen your frustration and self confidence.
If you want change to be consistent and lasting, you’ve got to clean up sabotaging programs where they originate – at the subconscious. Luckily, a highly effective change process is available, and using it is almost as easy as updating a document in your computer. It’s that simple and quick once you know how.
(A surprisingly high percentage of low handicap and pro golfers experience ball-stress. Its one of the first things we test for and correct.)
